Teenagersí thoughtless vandalism delayed trains for over an hour this evening (20th Feb 2003)between Freshfield and Ainsdale.
As the 8.10 from Liverpool central left Freshfield, passengers were told that some children had been seen on the track and therefore the train would have to go slow, so it took 45 minutes to get from Freshfield to near Ainsdale.
A bunch of kids were seen to be loitering on the footbridge before Ainsdale and a metal bar had been put or thrown onto the track. The youths threatened the train driver who had to call for assistance.
Some of the perpetrators left in a car, the registration number has been passed on to the police.
When assistance arrived and most of the kids had dispersed, the obstruction was cleared and the train carried on to Hillside where it terminated and passengers faced a further 10 minutes delay waiting for the next train into Southport.
Passengers who boarded the 8:10 PM train from Liverpool central eventually arrived in Southport at 10.
